I hope you're doing well.
This week Robert Colby's THE CAPTAIN MUST DIE is free for Nook and Kindle (available in the respective stores). I know that was one you liked.
Best, Ben LeRoy
Ed here: I think this is one of the great Gold Medals, right near the top of the list. And now it's FREE!
BTW I got four e mails off line about recommending Joseph Koenig's False Negative and saying it was my choice for an Edgar. This would be in the Paperback Original Category. So enquiring minds wanted to know if I had a choice for Best Novel as indeed I do. The Last Kind Words by Tom Piccirilli is not only a breakthrough for Tom but for the field itself. A brilliant literary crime novel dealing with a family you will never forget. A masterpiece.

Can't wait to dig into THE LAST KIND WORDS later this week.
I'm still shocked that EVERY SHALLOW CUT wasn't nominated for Edgars. EVERY SHALLOW CUT is a timely and insightful commentary on contemporary America, the writing hits you hard, and Piccirilli manages to write a brutal crime novel in which no crime actually happens. He takes a character to the edge, when they're capable of something disastrous, and leaves you waiting to see just what it is they'll actually do. It's a gutsy book.
I'm two thirds into THE LAST KIND WORDS and I agree this is a breakthrough. The plot is wrapped in so many emotional layers and in such a volatile family situation, it makes it so compelling. So far my favorite read in 2012.
This is great news. I have the PBO of The Captain Must Die but I've been reluctant to read my copy for fear of damaging it.
Given all the great things I've read about this book over the years I'm amazed it's taken this long for a reissue, free or not.
