Ed here:Last night Bill Crider headlined this story "Oh-Uh."I emailed him to see what he meant by that. His response is mine. (Though I'd add that DeCapiro would be among my last choices no matter who did the screenplay.)
Bill here: "I don't think McGee translates well to the screen, and good as Lehane is, I'm not sure he can make me believe Leo as McGee."
Dennis Lehane to Write ‘Travis McGee’ for Fox

Fox has tapped “Shutter Island” author Dennis Lehane to pen the script for World War II drama “Travis McGee.”
Peter Chernin and Amy Robinson will produce. THR broke the news.
Leonardo DiCaprio was once attached and his involvement is still being worked out. Mark Boal and David James Kelly are some of the other writers to work on the script in recent years.
Based on the book “Deep Blue Good-by,” the novel was part of 21 book series focusing on Travis Magee who is the central character in a series of mysteries by John D. McDonald. They are classic sleuth novels, set it Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.
Though this is Lehane’s second time writing a script it is the first time he has penned one that isn’t based off his own material. He previously wrote the Fox Searchlight pic “Animal Rescue” which is based on a short story he wrote.

I'm a diehard Travis fan and shudder at another Rod Taylor or Sam Elliott style adaptation. But I wouldn't count Leo out. He's done some fine work with the right director.
A good actor can do near anything, and Leo's as good as they come. I remember all the wailing when Cruise was tapped to play Jack Reacher, but he pulled it off just fine. I don't like Cruise, but he's one helluva fine actor.
Gah. Sorry, no Leo fan here. He looks 12 yrs old and I can never take him seriously. Bad, BAD choice for McGee.
Tell me this doesn't look McGee-esque:

Seems a very dubious proposition. DiCaprio is a good actor and can even go waaay against his youthful, non-physical appearance (The Departed). But he's too pretty and too soft for McGee. Clint Eastwood would have been perfect forty years ago. Today, Matt Damon, Brad Pitt, Matthew McConaughy, even Channing Tatum, might fit the role. But then, you'd need a good script and I'm not sure the books are adaptable. Haven't been so far.
